Furniture Refinishing & Repair FAQs 1. What is the actual refinishing process? Expert Woodworking strips the piece with an all solvent system. No dipping, water hoses, or caustics will touch your furniture. We perform any necessary repairs – loose door frames, loose veneer, broken drawers, etc. We carefully sand your piece, then prepare stain samples for your approval. We finish the piece with ample coats of Catalyzed Lacquer – we usually use ‘rubbed effect’ sheen, but we are happy to make the cabinets glossy, dead flat, or anything in between to ensure we match your existing decor. Some pieces do not require refinishing, especially if you are concerned about possible ‘Antique Roadshow’ value. We have a procedure using a steel wood and paste wax treatment, along with any repair and touch up necessary, that preserves and enriches the existing finish and beauty. 2. What is a typical job for Expert Woodworking? You will often find us working on dining sets, bedroom furniture, living room furniture, or many broken chairs. We restore family heirloom furniture, treasured items that are passed down through the family. We take great pride in preserving cherished family antiques. 3. What is the procedure when you work in the home? We are careful, friendly and cautious, however, working in your home can create dust, noise, and at times a strong chemical odor. We carefully block off the kitchen with plastic to contain the work area in the kitchen, and to keep any debris from spreading to the rest of your house. The slight disruption settles down quickly, and we work efficiently to keep your inconvenience to an absolute minimum. 4. Do you reface? No. Expert Woodworking does not believe in the long lasting quality of refacing, so we don’t do it. 5. Does Expert do any kitchen modifications along with the refinishing? Yes, we can make and install new soft close drawers and roll outs, new doors, new soft close hinges, add crown moulding, modify cabinetry for new appliances. If you have something in mind for your home, just ask us.
